Hypernatremia is a condition where the level of sodium in the blood is too high, usually above 145 mEq/L. Sodium helps regulate water balance in the body, so when it becomes too concentrated, it often means there’s a problem with water loss rather than too much salt. This can happen due to dehydration, excessive sweating, diarrhea, or certain medications, especially in people who can’t drink enough water to stay hydrated. Symptoms can include thirst, confusion, muscle twitching, and in severe cases, seizures or coma. Treatment involves carefully restoring the body's fluid balance, often with intravenous fluids, while avoiding rapid correction to prevent brain swelling.
